Hopping Across the Irish Sea to Inverness
Plodda Falls
We spent a day with Denise, the daughter of our neighbors, who lives near Inverness. She met our train and we piled into her car for a tour of the area. Accompanied by her dogs, we hiked to Plodda Falls in the Glen Affric area. You can see the falls two ways - from above on the observation deck and from below along the trail. We ended the day with a delicious meal made of ingredients from Denise's garden.
Inverness
Once we settled in at the Glen Mhor Hotel, we set out to explore Inverness. We could hear music and followed the sound across the River Ness to Eden Court and found the Under Canvas Festival. There was a trad (traditional music) concert scheduled for that night - lucky us!
The next day was sunny and warm, perfect for further exploration. We crossed the River Ness again, following the path over to Ness Island and the Ness Hydro Station. Continuing on the path we noticed ship masts moving through the trees on the Caledonian Canal. We continued our wandering back into town in time for dinner. Sunday found us in the hotel lobby checking out service times at local churches, and chatting with Lisa and Randy, who are also members of our tour. We found the Inverness Methodist Church, the northern-most Methodist church in the UK. Lisa and Randy decided to join us for the service and afterwards we were treated to tea and biscuits with the congregation, who were delighted that we took the time to worship with them. Lisa and Randy headed off on their own adventure, while we walked to Carnac Point and the Beauly Firth. The weather changed and we got caught in a heavy downpour on our way back to town. We took shelter under the Friars Bridge, then had to hustle to the hotel to meet our tour group. Our tour guide was Helen Houston, a cheerful and friendly woman who might be your favorite aunt. She's a wealth of knowledge which she shared happily with us throughout the tour. And she had great taste in restaurants! |
