Speyside Cooperage
From acorn to cask, we learned what it takes to recycle a barrel so it can be used again. Using American white oak barrels, coopers repair or replace any problem staves and reassemble the barrel. The barrels are tested for strength on a hammer-type machine. If the metal band bursts, it goes back to be redone by the cooper who first worked on it. Once the cask passes the watertight test, it's ready to enjoy its glory days as a whisky barrel.
Scones and Sheepdogs
Jane learned how to refine her baking skills during the scone making demonstration at the Rowan Tree. We also enjoyed the Leault Working Sheep Farm, comparing this sheep herding style to what we saw in Ireland. While there were some differences, the result was the same - the sheep knew who's the boss. And we had a delightful time meeting a puppy who just couldn't wait to grow up and herd sheep.
Wow Moment:
Helen arranged a private concert with guest piper Gilly. She's a member of the Vale of Atholl Pipe Band, has played for members of the royal family and has even met Queen Elizabeth. All of her children are pipers and her grandchildren are learning how. Here's a bit of Scotland the Brave.
