August 18: We had been waiting for this moment the entire trip and it was finally here! Although we bought our tickets months in advance, we had some challenges accessing our mobile tickets. I called the box office for help, and a very kind ticket agent stayed on the phone with me until our tickets were properly restored and visible. Whew! This was a once-in-a-lifetime event so we decided we would buy the best seats available. The Tattoo website lets you see the view from your seat so you know exactly what to expect. We were thrilled when we went to sit down, we had great seats!
The Edinburgh Royal Military Tattoo began after the Second World War as a fund raiser to help former soldiers recover from their wartime injuries. It continues that mission today, but has expanded it to include those involved in later military conflicts and other humanitarian causes. While it's famous for massed Pipes & Drums, many bands and military marching units from around the world are invited to participate. We were excited and proud to see the US Army Field Band and the US Air Force Honor Guard Drill Team perform. Other groups that left us wanting more included the Banda Monumental de Mexico, the Top Secret Drum Corps from Switzerland and the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo Dancers. But nothing compared to the thrill of the Massed Pipes & Drums marching off the field to Scotland the Brave. This was the WOW-est of Wow Moments. |
