Derry Murals
While the murals we'd seen thus far were decorative or celebratory, the murals in Derry were more somber. Derry was the sight of significant violence during The Troubles and that painful time is reflected in its murals. But there was hope - many of the murals we saw pointed towards peace and remembered Derry's manufacturing history.
WOW Moment: Giant's Causeway
This was what Jane had been waiting for. There are many tales of Finn Mac Cumhaill (MacCool) which Jane shared during children's story times. The Giant's Causeway was formed when Finn and Scottish giant Bennandonnar argued over the ownership of Ireland. Finn threw boulders into the sea so he could cross over to Scotland and challenge Bennandonnar. When he saw that Bennandonnar was a gigantic giant, Finn returned to Ireland, leaving the causeway in place to lure Bennandonnar over. Finn's wife disguised Finn as a baby and when Bennandonnar saw how big the baby was, he ran back to Scotland, afraid to take on the father of this huge baby. As he ran, he tore up the causeway to keep Finn from crossing over. Today's Giant's Causeway is what's left. It was thrilling to see it.
