Cawdor CastleThe Dowager Countess of Cawdor still lives here, but she moves out during tourist season. Unlike other castles we saw, this was clearly someone's home, filled with personal mementoes including family photos and a collection of glass balls spread throughout the rooms. We were so focused on the house that we didn't have much time for the gardens, but they were spectacular, even in the rain.

Culloden Battlefield and Clan Stewart
We spent time in Ireland looking for Jane's Kavenagh relatives, but Scotland was Ed's turn to hunt for ancestors. His mom was a Stewart and we were on the lookout for them. Turns out we didn't have to look too hard, there were many more Stewarts in Scotland than there were Kavenaghs in Ireland. The Battle of Culloden was the final bloody defeat for Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Jacobites. The Bonnie Prince flew over the sea to Skye and we wandered the misty battlefield, finding the Stewart marker. We even met a hairy coo.
